Bengal gram, also known as Chana dal, is flat on one side and rounded on the other. It is widely consumed in a roasted form as it gives a distinctive nutty taste. Chana Dal is cultivated in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Roasted Chana Dal is creamy white on the flat surface, and has a yellow hue on the rounded side.
